And our reporter Luo Laiming tells us about the ongoing efforts to improve the environment in east China's Jiangxi Province.

Respecting, adapting to and protecting nature is essential for building a modernized China with a friendly environment for both people and wildlife. In east China's Jiangxi Province, a ten-year fishing ban in the Yangtze River since 2020 has allowed aquatic life to replenish itself.

ZHAN SHUPIN Deputy director, the Bureau of Fisheries, Jiangxi Provincial Department of Agricultural and Rural Affairs "Since the fishing ban, we are glad to see a reduction to the trend of eco-system deterioration. In his report to the 20th Party Congress, Xi Jinping reiterated the determination to implement the fishing ban, which is important to promote quality development in the Yangtze River region. In the future, we will step up efforts to implement the policy and provide support for those who have quit fishing as a means of living."

The critically endangered Yangtze finless porpoises, with a population slightly above 1,000 according to a 2017 survey, have become more frequent visitors in the waters less than 10 kilometers from the downtown area of Jiangxi provincial capital Nanchang.

ZHAN SHUPIN Deputy director, the Bureau of Fisheries, Jiangxi Provincial Department of Agricultural and Rural Affairs "We carry out live monitoring of the living environment of Yangtze finless porpoises. Whenever and wherever there is fluctuation in the water quality and food source, we know in advance. In that case, we deploy extra food, or lure them out of the harm's way."

At Poyang Lake National Nature Reserve, more than 120,000 migratory birds have arrived to spend the winter. China's largest freshwater lake hosted more than 600,000 wintering birds at the peak season last December, but due to extended drought this year, the reserve has been working hard to compensate.

HUANG SHA Poyang Lake National Nature Reserve Management Bureau "We've cut down yellowed carex to allow fresh ones to spawn, and worked to preserve and refill water at various shallow tributaries, in order to bolster food sources for the wintering birds. We've also worked with government departments to beef up patrols in the region to safeguard their living environment."

The report delivered by Xi Jinping to the 20th CPC National Congress says China will carry out major projects to preserve and restore key ecosystems and protect biodiversity. The report stresses the need to maintain harmony between humanity and nature, which has become a consensus and put into practice across the country.
